My Understanding of Light and Dark
I'd like to describe to you what I’ve learned about light and dark, how it relates to a candle flame and our life experiences.
Many seem to struggle, with the concept of light and dark. Believing dark is bad, to be avoided, some even think and believe dark is evil. Yet. What if light and dark are just a continuum, that dark always leads to light and light can become dark? That these two aspects of the universe and our life, weave in and out with each other, like the light of the day turns to the dark of night. Most people forget that creation begins and happens in the darkness. The “Big Bang” happen from the darkness… the void. A seed begins to germinate and grow in the darkness of the soil. A fetus develops in the darkness of the mother’s womb.
Now let’s look the flame of a candle. The flame of a candle has 3 parts. The first part lies just about the wick. If you notice, just above the wick is a dark empty space, I called this empty space the “sacred emptiness.” It is the darkness, the void, the emptiness within the flame. Surrounding this dark, empty space is the second part. a faint line of a blue color, a blue tint if you will. What I see and call the Divine. Surrounding this blue tint is the third part, the light of the flame. So, within the flame, the light and dark are existing at the same time, and what we see as darkness transforms into the light of the flame. In fact, it is because of the dark of the flame, that the light can be more clearly seen and known. This is the reason for contrast, in order to experience and understand one aspect of life, we need to experience what would be seen as it’s opposite, what we call duality, the other end of what’s really a continuum. The blue tint of the flame is within both the dark and light of the flame.
The flame represents our life, the good and so-called darkness co-exist. One weaves into the other and the divine is in both the light (joy) and dark (sorrow) of our life, just as it’s in the light and dark of the flame. No separation, all is connected, a part of and an expression of Source.
Realise you are the flame and the flame is you. You are the emptiness of the darkness, the void of the flame. You are the light of the flame, with its fullness as well. The divine dwells within both the dark, the emptiness of you, the light, and the fullness of you too. To accept and embrace the darkness, with its emptiness, and the light with its fullness, is to be in the everything and the nothing simultaneously, while knowing it’s all of Source, is to be in pure joy… otherwise known as bliss.
Sit with the flame of the candle, let yourself become one with the darkness, the “Sacred emptiness” of the flame, knowing you are surrounded by the divine, you are surrounded and embraced by love and light. All is well.
I close with this fitting passage from A Course in Miracles T-21, I:8.
“Beyond the body, beyond the sun and stars, past everything you see and yet somehow familiar, is an arc of golden light that stretches as you look into a great shinning circle. And all the circle fills with light before your eyes. The edges of the circle disappear, and what is in it is no longer contained at all. The light expands and covers everything, extending to infinity forever shinning and with no break or limit anywhere. Within it everything is joined in perfect continuity. Nor is it possible to imagine that anything could be outside, for there is nowhere that this light is not.”
